In the study “Chemical Substances in Tattoo Ink” for the Danish government in 2012 some 65 inks have been analysed. It showed 10 of 11 black inks that were studied contained a concentration of toxic material, which exceeds the levels of the European safety recommendations. The reason why tattooed people do not develop much more skin cancer according to the pending risk of these toxic substances is that most particles are probably stable in the dermis of the skin. Laser Tattoo removal shatters the pigments, making the particles unstable and more likely to flow into the body’s lymph system where there is direct contact with the bone marrow and the immune system. According to Prof. Serup this is the reason why in Germany Laser-Tattoo-Removal is already decreasing.
